ROBBERT WOLTERING is Assistant professor of Arabic Language and Culture at the University of Amsterdam. He studied Arabic and Political Science at the University of Amsterdam and obtained his doctorate through the International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World, ISIM (2004-2008). His main research theme is the study of images of the (stereotypical) Other in the contemporary Arab world. His PhD-thesis was entitled Occidentalisms (I.B. Tauris  2011), involving a study of how the West is perceived in the Arab world today, in particular by Egyptian intellectuals and the Egyptian media. Other research interests include the modern Arab literary reception of Zenobia, and Islamic architecture. Woltering has been teaching at the University of Amsterdam since 2006.
